Gallery 27 was pleased to present the solo exhibition of ‘DENG XINLI in WANDERLAND’ by Chinese artist DENG Xinli from 26th of November to 4th of December, 2016 at Space 27, showcasing 27 paintings from 7 series including some individual pieces. It is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.

This exhibition also marks the launch of “Mountain Seclusion” series, that puts the proportions of figures and landscape to a further extreme, seemingly to the mood of traditional Chinese landscape paintings. Although the artist’s signature treatment of lines, textures and forms are retained, the quasi rock mountains that recalls flocks of black clouds and splashed inks build up a strong sense of loneliness and nothingness.

Alan CHAN, the founder of Gallery 27 and the curator, was deeply charmed by DENG Xinli’s mixed style in his painting firstly in 2012, when CHAN’s company undertook the branding, interior design and art programme project for China Rouge, an exclusive performance lounge at Galaxy Macau. Alan has invited DENG to create a special artwork that integrated with the interior décor he designed. “A painting within a painting is what I would describe for his masterly pictorial visual language in almost three dimensional shapes. His work requires us open up our minds and eyes to view,” said Alan.

Graduated from The Central Academy of Fine Arts with training in oil painting, Deng has also resided in New Zealand for years to further his studies and established his artistic practice. He employs delicate skills and applies detailed attention to textures, exaggerated proportions and symbols that goes beyond time, together with a designerly mastery of compositions, to create a visual outcome with strong contrasts that is unique to his own. ”DENG’s paintings float between the neo-pop and neo-realism, challenging the classification of art. What interested me the most though was the connection between the pieces and Chinese culture. With graceful imagination, they played out the comfort of freedom and ethereal nature – the traditional Chinese ideals of beauty. One could say DENG Xinli’s Paintings have displayed China in the new century,” reviewed by Peng FENG, the art critic.

The paintings by DENG Xinli is a dialogue between the past and the future. He uses an almost graphical and pictorial visual language to present a fantastical world encompassing Chinese mythologies and surreal imaginations. A 84-page catalog includes exhibiting artworks is specially designed by Gallery 27 and can be purchased at Garden 27 in Shanghai or Alan Chan Creations Taobao store.
