Situated at a historical site of the former “Shanghai Museum”, one of the first modern museums in China, Rockbund Art Museum revives the 1930s architecture by appointing British architect David Chipperfield to restore the building and expanding the space with modern and minimal design style. It aims to become an international platform for the promotion and exchange of contemporary art in China.

The visual identity of the Museum designed by Alan Chan Design Company is composed of the initials of Rockbund Art Museum – RAM. The logotype’s minimal composition reflects the Museum’s clean and extensive space. It also evokes a sophisticated but approachable image of the Museum which is located at the heart of the booming Shanghai.

From the historic exterior outlook of the building to the contemporary art collection of the Museum, the neutral form of the logotype stands the test of time as it matches harmoniously with the past and present. Besides, the letter A in the logotype has the middle stroke omitted to have the typography looks cleaner. It reminds people of the spaciousness of the Museum and its role of cultivating visitors’ appreciation of art and culture.
